I was asked to be one of the speaker's at this year’s A Day In The Life Design Conference in Baltimore held at the beautiful Maryland Institute College of Art. There was a ton of top-notch creative talent lined up and it was a extremely fun and informative day.
I was asked to speak on the topic of WHAT I DIDN'T LEARN IN DESIGN SCHOOL. Here is the official description of my session: As a design student, you learn the ins and outs of the design profession (from software to studying the experts). Or do you? All to often what falls through the cracks is the real world information you need to know in order to survive in the creative profession. This session will cover topics such as the importance of networking (strategy/tactics), why effective communication skills are just as important as your design abilities when it comes to landing a job, and how to approach employers and sell yourself as a creative professional.
The plan was to thoroughly document the journey to, during and after the event though photos but there was so much going on that weekend, we didn’t cover it as well as we would have liked.
However, we have received numerous interested inquires about how it went. So we have decided to put together a small visual timeline of our experience. Jenn except those credited to John Waire, who graciously gave us permission to use his photos here, took all the photos shown here.
If you would like to see more of John’s photos, see video clips of some of the key speakers and learn more about the conference then visit here.
9am and waiting for the first train to take us to 30th Street Station where we will hop another train to Baltimore.

This was one of the views of Baltimore from our hotel window. It immediately reminded my of the opening credits from Welcome Back, Kotter.

That’s me beginning my first session, which went over really well. Thanks to everyone who signed up to here me speak at 10 in the morning, which took some faith.
In-between my sessions, I was happy to answer anyone’s questions . The students of MICA are a extremely talented and nice bunch of creatives. I really enjoyed talking with them. Although I will admit, it made me miss my teaching days. Photo by John Waire

I am going to guess it might have been this talking point slide. Although this is one of the points that really seemed to resonate with many of the attendees.
